Peirce ’ s Theory of Signs 1 Jay

چکیده

The lifetime of Charles Sanders Peirce spanned a period of tremendous change and development in human knowledge, in the sciences in general. He was a young man of twenty in the year that Origin of Species was published; he approached the end of his life just before Albert Einstein presented us with General Relativity. His lifetime saw the emergence of psychology as a discipline separate from philosophy, a birth attended by philosopher-psychologists such as his good friend William James. The work of Peirce, like that of the other American Pragmatists, reflects the ferment of the times. His thought bears the imprint of science, not the science of that Nineteenth Century which as Loren Eiseley has remarked, "regarded the 'laws' of nature as imbued with a kind of structural finality, an integral determinism, which it was the scientists’ duty to describe," (Eisele, 1971) but rather, of science as open, as intrinsically revisable, as radically empirical. Working from the model of science in this latter sense, Peirce held that philosophy, and indeed logic itself, must ultimately return to experience for validation (2.227).

The mobile era of electronic communication has created a huge semiotic system, constructed out of triadic components envisaged by the American scientist and philosopher Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914), such as icons, indices and symbols, and signs, objects and interpretants. Iconic signs bear a physical resemblance to what they represent. Indices point at something and say “there!”, and symbols s...

The Comprehensive Categories of Life

I came to the ideas of Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) through Stanley Salthe. I had been interested in the theory of hierarchies for some years and reading Salthe’s Evolving Hierarchical Systems (1985) and Development and Evolution (1993), I was intrigued by his suggestion that Peirce’s triadic philosophy held the key to such a theory. Specifically, Salthe draws attention to Peirce’s theory...

Richard Swedberg " The Role of the Senses and Signs in the Economy : More on the Centrality of Materiality " 20 1 1

This paper suggests that the sociological analysis of economic life may be improved by drawing on the theory of signs as developed by philosopher Charles Peirce. I take my point of departure from Georg Simmel’s essay “Sociology of the Senses” (1907) and raise the question if an economic sociology of the senses is possible and, if so, what it would look like. The different ways in which the sens...

Gilles Deleuze: Beyond Peirce’s Semiotics

This paper studies the role of the semiotic discussions of Charles Sanders Peirce, the American philosopher and mathematician, in the formation of Deleuze’s first leading book on cinema, Cinema 1: the Movement-Image,in whichthe author surpasses Peirce’s semiotics. We will show how Deleuze creates a new form of signs in his second leading book on cinema, Cinema 2: the Time-Image. Deleuze had tri...

Images, diagrams and metaphors: hypoicons in the context of Peirce’s 66- fold classification of signs

In his 1903 Syllabus, Charles S. Peirce makes a distinction between icons and iconic signs, or hypoicons, and briefly introduces a division of the last ones into images, diagrams and metaphors. Peirce scholars have tried to make better sense of those concepts by understanding iconic signs in the context of the 10 classes of signs described in the same Syllabus. We will argue, however, that the ...
